MiniTown falls under the Building Bridges program at CommunityNashville. The overall goal of the Building Bridges program is to provide a program within an environment of safety and trust where participants can develop human relations, conflict resolution, communication and leadership skills. Participants gain pride in themselves without sacrifice of individual or group identity of faith, culture or religion through an integrated program of experiential education. They work to ensure respect and reduce prejudice, discrimination and oppression related to race, religion, culture, gender, age, physical ability or socio-economic level. Leadership skills are practiced and refined in the multicultural community created at the camp.
Day 1: Building Community and Looking at Ourselves
- Establish a trusting community
- Begin a dialogue with one another
- Learn team-building skills
- Develop strategies for making better choices
Day 2: Learning about Others: Respecting Differences
- Begin exploring our identities as members of different groups (based on ethnicity, culture, race, beliefs, etc.)
- Explore how being members of these groups affects who we are, our values and how we communicate and perceive others
- Recognize the impact and consequences of stereotyping and "isms" on personal identity, interpersonal relationships and social structures
- Understand how to challenge and confront oppression and build inclusion at personal, interpersonal and systemic levels
Day 3: Becoming Allies & Re-entry, Returning Home
- Reinforce messages of respect for diversity and inclusion
- Identify human relations issues within school community
- Develop skills and tools for assessment of school environment
- Form a multicultural team to affect change within school
- Implement steps for changing the school environment
